Bighorn Sheep

Scientific Name: Ovis canadensis

Subspecies: From a total of 7 described subspecies, we will include 3, as they are of most importance for hunters. The distinction between "nelsoni" and "californiana" are not clear in the trophy-books. 1. Canadian Bighorn Sheep (Ovis c. canadensis): From Alberta (Canada) to Montana, South Dakota and Iowa (USA). 2. Nelson's Bighorn Sheep or Desert Bighorn (Ovis c. nelsoni): California, Nevada and northern Mexico. 3. Californian Bighorn Sheep (Ovis c. californiana): Southern B.C. (Canada), Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Nevada (USA).

Habitat: Steep mountain sides with sparce vegetation and narrow gorges.

Description: Large wild sheep weighing around 140 kg and measuring up to 1,10 m over the shoulder, reaching a total body length of 1,90 m. General colour greyish brown to brown, with a buff rump.

Hunting method: Stalking.
