In southern Spain you can hunt the Ronda ibex. This species is somewhat smaller than the Gredos and Beceite ibex, but it doesn't make the hunt any less exciting. The fur color is lighter than its relatives to the north, where especially the Gredos bucks tend to become very dark as they age. The horns are robust and, at the same time, beautifully lyre-shaped, typically reaching a length of 50–65 cm. However, in certain areas, truly large specimens of around 70 cm or more can be found!
Here you will hunt in magnificent nature with mountain landscapes at elevations of 1,000 - 2,000 m.
As is the case with other mountain game, Spanish ibex are both elusive and vigilant. After being pursued by humans, eagles, foxes, wolves, lynxes, and other predators for hundreds of years, they have developed extremely sharp senses. Their sense of smell and hearing are fantastic, but their sight is truly exceptional.
All of this, combined with the terrain they inhabit, makes the Spanish ibex a worthy adversary and a highly coveted trophy.
The hunting season for this species is from October to May. The best hunting months are October, November, and December.
The hunt itself is a classic mountain hunt. In the early morning hours, one will attempt to locate the ibexes from higher elevations, often grazing in the lower lying areas. Using powerful spotting scopes, the hunting guide and the hunter will assess the size of the trophies and determine if an animal of the desired size is in the herd.
The distance to the animals at this point can range from a few hundred meters to several kilometers.
Now begins the part of the hunt that many hunters believe elevates mountain hunting above other types, namely stalking. The planning of the stalk is critical, as there is often no contact with the ibexes for long periods, sometimes lasting several hours.
Hunters will normally stay in a charming country hotel close to the hunting district. The hotel offers good facilities, well furnished rooms with private bathroom and toilet, and it’s kitchen serves good Spanish cuisine and fine wines. Spain is also an ideal destination for non-hunting guests. Many of the hunting districts are close to exciting cities with fantastic architecture and a rich...
