Whitetail Deer

Scientific Name: Odocoilus virginianus

Subspecies: A total of 38 subspecies have been described, 14 of which for Central- and South America. In the trophy books they are often referred to as the "Tropical White-tail".

Habitat: Forests, swamps, shrubby areas, farmland, both in mountainous regions and on level ground.

Description: Medium sized new world deer weighing around 140 kg. It measures up to 1,10 m over the shoulder and reaches a total body length of 2,40 m, without tail. General colour rufous brown in summer, bluish grey in winter. The underparts and rump white, tail broad and dark above, white below. The main beam of the antlers slides backwards, then abruptly forwards, with erect branches on hind margin.

Hunting method: Stalking, lying in wait behind screen or in raised hide, with beaters and dogs, on horseback.
