Scientific Name: Saiga tatarica

Subspecies: 2 subspecies have been described: 1. Saiga t. tatarica: From the Kirgise steppes (mouth of the Volga east to the Russian Altai), western Dzungaria in China. 2. Saiga t. mongolica: Southwest Mongolia.

Habitat: Dry steppe and semi-desert with firm ground where they are often found in large herds.

Description: Medium sized antelope weighing up to 70 kg and measuring up to 80 cm over the shoulder. It reaches a total body length of 1,70 m without tail (10 cm). General colour pale yellowish brown. Characteristic face with enlarged, overhanging upper lip. The antlers are semi transparent, the colour of wax and dark at their tips. They are heavily ridged, pointing outwards and then upwards.

Hunting method: Driven hunt (small driven hunt on the steppe. The herds are carefully driven towards positioned hunters.), stalking, lying in wait.
