Scientific Name: Axis porcinus
Subspecies: 1. Axis p. porcinus: Pakistan, India to Myanmar and Tenasserim, Sri Lanka. 2. Axis p. annamiticus: Kampuchea, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Introduced into Victoria and Gippsland (Australia) in 1870.
Habitat: Humid grass jungle, riverbanks, mangroves and open grass plains.
Description: Roe Deer sized deer weighing up to 50 kg and measuring up to 80 cm over the shoulder. It may reach a total body length of 1.50 m without tail (25 cm). General colour dark brown. The antlers are forked and have several points.
Hunting method: Stalking, lying in wait, with dogs, on elephantback.
