Wolf (Asia)

Scientific Name: Canis lupus

Subspecies: From a total of 7 described subspecies, three belong to the Holarctic region of Asia: 1. Common Wolf (Canis l. lupus): Ural mountains to central Russia. 2. Steppe Wolf (Canis l. campestris): Steppes and deserts from the western border of the region to central Asia. 3. Tundra Wolf (Canis l. albus): Taiga- and tundra regions of Asia.

Habitat: Open woodland areas, tundra, large forests, mountainous forests.

Description: The wolf is reminiscent of a large Alsatian dog, but has a shallower chest, broader head and thicker neck. The animal weighs around 90 kg and measures up to 1 m over the shoulder, reaching a total body length of 1,60 m, without tail. General colour grey to grey brown, sometimes even reddish brown (in summer). The foot-prints are difficult to distinguish from those made by an equal-sized dog, but normally they are longer and slightly narrower.

Hunting method: Stalking, lying in wait near bait, cordon hunting, driven hunts.
